Greenwood was established in 1851. It became the county seat of the newly formed Sebastian County. The city was named after Judge Alfred Burton Greenwood. It became a major business center during the American Civil War. It was officially incorporated on November 22, 1884. The Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad first entered the area in 1887.
